POPKO - Wharf
Come Together - Virtual Open Call Exhibit -- April 2020 The Provincetown Commons Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA Title: WHARF 100cm x 160cm Acrylic on canvas Prague, 2020 April Popko From Color Block Connections series |
A Wharf is a structure, on the shore of a harbor, where ships may dock to load and unload cargo or passengers. I was inspired to make this piece during such a time of uncertainty because people around the world are searching for a place to "load up" on inspiration to obtain a sense of security. At the same time, they must "unload" all worries and fears. Paintings from my Color Block Connection series are aligned with the theme of this show, Come Together, as more than ever, we need connection. As you can imagine in this piece, sky and water meet, heaven and earth are touching and connection is prominent. The golden lines between the sky and water evoke the wharf pilings, drilled deep into the underwater sand while still reflecting light on top of the water. The golden lines also perhaps conjure up ideas of lightning bolts or electricity that connects both heaven and earth--our reality that we know of and that of the unknown...
Note from the artist:
"I aim to ease your mind during this time and to inspire you. As the world needs to feel secure, allowing ourselves to daydream and use our imagination is more important than ever. Hopefully this painting will give you a breath of fresh air and a sense of hope and security. Have a beautiful day!"--April Popko
