While on the African island of Zanzibar, April experienced Tanzanian treasures, such as swimming with dolphins and befriending people from the noble Massai tribe. Inspired by the warm African sunsets, vibrant fruits, fragrant flowers, and exotic animals, you can also experience Africa through April's eyes.
The white sandy beaches and historic Stone Town have influenced some of the textures and colors in Popko's artwork. She also captures the watery essence of the Indian Ocean, specifically while snorkeling off of Mnemba Island (owned by Bill Gates/&Beyond) where over 600 species of coral reef fish and turtles thrive. April was inspired by the gorgeous marine conservation area with migratory and resident birds as well as swaying coconut palms and abundant sunshine.
Tanzanian themes are depicted also through an extended FLEET collection of Popko's sailboats, re-contextualizing her sailing vessels into the local Swahili boats, specifically the Ngalawa. As this collection develops, you may see more Tanzanian imagery emerge from Popko's studio.
